Virginia Musical Theatre Announces 27th Season
Features the Regional Premieres of MAMMA MIA and Disney’s New Musical, FREAKY FRIDAY, Which is on a Fast Track for Broadway

Virginia Beach, VA—Virginia Musical Theatre’s (VMT) Artistic Director Chip Gallagher and Executive Director Mark Hudgins announced today that tickets for the 27th season go on sale Tuesday, Sept. 5. Following with tradition, VMT will produce two contemporary musicals and two Broadway classics at the Sandler Center for the Performing Arts.

VMT is a professional theatre dedicated to nurturing local and regional artists. Its partnership with Norfolk’s Governor’s School for the Arts (GSA) is a key part of that mission, said Gallagher, who is also the Musical Theatre Chair for GSA. The Governor’s School has helped to launch numerous Broadway, TV and film careers, including that of Grant Gustin (TV’s The Flash), XXXXXXXXX.

“VMT gives our very talented students an opportunity to work with current professionals, including Broadway performers,” said Gallagher. “That’s not something most high school students can say they’ve done.”

The local theatre company opens its season in October with the regional premiere of the global smash hit, MAMMA MIA, starring Emmy-nominated actress Kera O’Bryon. Complete casting for the production will be announced soon.

In December, the company will produce a brand new musical, DISNEY’S FREAKY FRIDAY, based on the beloved Mary Rodgers novel and the succeeding Disney films. From the writer of TV’s Parenthood, and with music and lyrics by the creators of NEXT TO NORMAL, FREAKY FRIDAY is on a fast track to go to Broadway.

“The music is fantastic,” said Hudgins. “Here’s an opportunity for our local audiences to see a brand new production before it goes to Broadway.”

The theatre will close out the season with two classics, JEKYLL & HYDE and KISS ME, KATE.

Season tickets are available as three or four show subscriptions. As part of its educational mission, season tickets for children and students under 25 are only $72. Individual tickets for the new season are available starting Sept. 5. Call 757-340-5446 to purchase tickets or visit the Sandler Center Box Office.
